Rationale of a TWG on TILK-LLA in the HKH region

Impacts of climate change are intensifying across the Hindu Kush Himalay (HKH) region. Adapting to climate change is a new reality for thousands of communities. Through regional specificities and centuries of learning and experimentation, communities have developed various adaptive mechanisms which have become a part of their tradition, culture, and lifestyle. There is increasing realisation that adaptation solutions should be designed considering the specificities of the HKH region, tapping into the vast repository of TILK systems being practiced over centuries and have well adapted to the local context. The adaptation solutions should be locally based to ensure sustainability and avoid potential maladaptive practices.

There are several methodological challenges with regards to identifying, mapping, validating and applying ITLK for adaptation. Members of HUC can collaborate and play an important role in co-developing ITLK-based adaptation solutions and help institutionalise modes of locally-led adaptation across the HKH. This TWG aims to foster regional collaboration to accelerate TILK-LLA solutions across the HKH.

Background

The HUC TWG on TILK-LLA was formally launched at the ICIMOD Headquarters in 2023, consisting of full members and associate members. The meeting also set an agenda to draft a strategy paper by the group comprising key aspects such as:

  • Identifying, mapping, and validating TILK for designing locally led climate action
  • Advance model cases of LLA in HKH based on co-learning and co-development
  • Facilitate upscaling TILK-LLA solutions across HKH to speed-up adaptive transformation

Activities planned for 2023-2025

  • Update and enrich the TWG-ITLK-LLA web page within the HUC website
  • Mobilise HUC in the implementation of ITLK and LLA related initiatives
  • Compendium of TILK and LLA-based solutions in the HKH region
  • Organise an awareness and capacity webinar series
